Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a scathing attack on the Congress and the Nehru-Gandhi family for ignoring the interests of the army and soldiers who were fighting at the borders. He was dedicating the National War Memorial at India Gate to the nation.
Earlier in the day, many war veterans and ex-Army officers thanked PM Modi for setting up the War Memorial in the National Capital. Rajya Sabha MP V Muraleedharan said for the last 70 years, the Congress was engaged in conferring all honours on the Nehru family and ignored the valiant sacrifices of our jawans. Former Army Chief General VP Malik also thanked the prime minister.
Speaking before PM Modi, Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “What we need today is your trust, and trust in the Prime Minister. The welfare of ex-servicemen is always at the top of our priorities.”
Wing Commander Sushmita Sekhon who commanded the guard of honour at the inauguration, later told ANI: “I basically belong to a Defence family. My father is in vigilance department, my brother is in Army. I and my husband are in Air Force, brother-in-law in Navy, and father-in-law was in Navy. We all know the importance of this moment….Names of fallen soldiers are imbibed throughout this memorial which gives me goosebumps. And I’m part of this historic moment. This is a feeling that I can’t describe in words.”
