The Kerala government led by Pinarayi Vijayan had to eat a humble pie as Lord Ayyappa devotees prevented bid of some Christian and Muslim activists to go to Sabarimala temple in violation of age-old traditions. Three women who turned up today are – Rahana Fathima, Kavita Koshi and Mary Sweetie. Mary Sweetie, a staunch Christian, told mediapersons that she did not carry her mandatory “iru mudi” because she “cannot handle her high-heels and irumudi together”. It must be mentioned that Ayyappa devotees do not wear footwear during their truck on the hills.
“The Marxists brought activists from Andhra Pradesh to challenge the millions of devotees. The government is trying to create disturbance in Sabarimala,” said K Surendran, BJP leader.
Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said those who have come to the temple were not believers of Lord Ayyappa. “These are Kiss of Love activists whose intentions are dubious. The government is deliberately trying to cause civil unrest,” Ramesh told newspersons.
IGP Sreejith told mediamen that the controversial women activists made a hasty retreat. “They expressed their willingness to go back.” Thantri (chief priest)’s decision turned the tables on the government which was bulldozing SC verdict on devotees.
Protesters had made it clear that they would not stop protest until the controversial girls go back to the base camp at Pampa. “It is a real victory of Hindu Dharma on Vijayadashami Day. It is tight slap on the face that vainglorious and megalomaniac Pinarayi Vijayan and his Christian advisors,” said Gopa Kumar, a devotee from Kochi.
