In a bizarre case, a Muslim woman was forced to undergo nikah-halala with her father-in-law after her husband pronounced talaq to her. Adding to her woes, the woman was asked to undergo halala once again with her brother-in-law after her husband divorced her the second time a few years later. This incident took place in Bareilly district of UP.
According to media reports, Wasim, a resident of Gadi-Chowki, married Shabana (name changed), a resident of Bankhana, in 2009. The woman alleged that in 2011, Wasim threw her out of the household after pronouncing triple talaq. After a few months, he wanted to bring her back. So she was forced to undergo nikah-halala with her father-in-law. Although they started staying together, Wasim continued to indulge in physical assault and violence. In 2017, she was divorced again. According to the woman, her husband put a condition that she would have to undergo nikah halala with his brother if she wanted to be readmitted to the household. Shabana refused to agree to the proposal and started putting up in her sister’s house.
She approached a local NGO, Hazrat Helping Society, which took up her case. Local Mufti Khurshid Alam says he couldn’t figure out how she was asked to undergo nikah-halala with her father-in-law. According to him, if it had taken place, then it was a serious crime. After nikah-halala with the father-in-law, the woman can’t return to her erstwhile husband. The mufti said a detailed probe should be conducted.
