LDF govt-sponsored 2-day event was organised by anarchists and ultra-Left activists
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan gave Arpo Arthavam (Hail Mensuration), organised by a group of extremist, pro-Maoist and anti-Sabarimala activists in Kochi’s Marine Drive, a miss at the last moment. Vijayan was slated to be the chief guest at the two-day event for “celebrating menstruation and speaking up against taboos”. The organisers were hopeful that he would participate but the chief minister changed his plans after there was an adverse police report on the background of the organiers. Sources said the police report suggested that some of the organisers belonged to Maoist and anarchist groups.
Although the chief minister was expected to arrive at 12 pm, the organisers were informed about his inability to arrive only at 1.30 pm. In the absence of Vijayan, Kanakadurga and Bindu, the two women who entered Sabarimala violating the age-old tradition hogged the limelight. According to eyewitnesses, many of the songs sung at the event had an anti-Hindu tone. The reports suggested that a state government department has sponsored the event.
However, trolls had a field day at the cost of Vijayan. The entrance to the venue in the shape of a vagina has stirred emotions of aversion and derision. Many comments were bordering banality but one cannot find fault with them as Vijayan asked for it. Vijayan used to boast that without any fear he used to walk amid rivals sporting unsheathed swords. A message reads: “Just like that his walking through the entrance would have made a nice spectacle — a revolutionary one at that.”
A couple of years ago, Marine Drive in Kochi witnessed another controversial event of ‘Kiss of Love’ which was also supported by CPI(M). But the leaders had to cut a sorry figure when key organisers got embroiled in a flesh trade scandal. The event was inaugurated by Avantika, Trupti, Renju and Ananya – the four transgenders who entered Sabarimala temple in December 2018. Rekha Raj, Daya Gayathri, former Gujarat DGP RB Sreekumar, CPI(ML)’s PC Unnichekkan and director Pa Ranjith were some of the guest speakers at on Saturday. Supreme Court advocate Indira Jaising was also a speaker.
