The Kerala High Court sought a report from the state government on the proposed time restrictions it seeks to impose on Sabarimala devotees. This is being seen as an effort to foil devotees’ attempts to prevent young women from entering the hill shrine. The government wants to facilitate the entry of young women at any cost, despite the fact that women were on the forefront to protect traditions. Despite the massive campaign by the Marxists, the government could line up only a few non-believers. The court also said the government should reveal all its plans with regard to Sabarimala in its report.
Meanwhile, the total number of arrests has touched about 3500. Women, children and senior citizens were rounded up from homes at night and severe sections were imposed on them.
The HC asked the government on October 29 what actions would be taken against the police for the atrocities against the innocent devotees who participated in peaceful nama japa yatras. The court asked the government to submit a report in this matter. The HC order came in the wake of a petition filed by Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti (Shabarimala Tradition Protection Council) stating that police do torture the participants of the peaceful nama japa yatra by registering cases. The petitioners pointed out that police resorted to excessive actions and damaged the vehicles. Division Bench asked the government to report what action has been taken against the police for the atrocities they resorted to. A civilized society needs a professional police system hence Kerala needs it.
