More than 20 lakh devotees drawn from different parts of the country as well countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh took a dip at Ganga Sagar, the confluence of Ganga and Bay of Bengal on Makar Sankranti on Sunday.
The South 24 Parganas district administration has made arrangements expecting a surge in the number of pilgrims. “There is an increase in the number of pilgrims. Last year about 15 lakh pilgrims had visited. We were prepared for an increased volume of pilgrims. So far about 20,00,000 people visited the place,” said district magistrate Y Ratnakara Rao.
According to media reports, around 3,000 police personnel have been deployed to take care of the security. The government has also pressed into service seven drones to keep a check on the security.
