The accused staff tells police that Sisters used to sell babies born to unwed mothers for money
Anima Indwar, the employee of the Nirmal Hriday, the orphanage run by Missionaries of Charity (MOC), told investigators that representatives of the Church were forcing her to own up to the responsibility of the illegal child trafficking racket. She told investigators that the Missionaries were carrying out baby sale racket for long and she knew a good number of babies born to unwed mothers had been sold in the past from this shelter home.
According to a report in Goa Chronicle, Indwar claimed police during interrogation that she was being made a scape-goat. It must be mentioned here that the Catholic Bishop Council of India general secretary and Bishop of Ranchi Theodore Mascarenhas had disowned her and defended the Sisters of Nirmal Hriday. It is in this context that she said the Church is putting all blame on her in a bid to save accused Sisters of MOC.
Indwar said, “I was just an employee at the shelter getting Rs 5800 a month who obeyed orders of the shelter home officials to deliver babies to buyers.”
The Goa Chronicle report said the Nirmal Hriday employee also gave the police a note which she claimed was given to her by Sister Conselia inside the Birse Munda Central Jail. The note instructs Indwar what she should tell the police during investigations, “I have kept the money of two unwed mothers. There is Rs 78000 in the bag and I will return Rs 22000 too. Sister Conselia is innocent.”
According to the police, two babies were sold for Rs 1 lakh. The chit purportedly written by Conselia, clears her of any blame.
