Cochin (Kerala): Kerala High court today refused to stay the trial of Father Thomas Kottor and Sister Sephy, the first and the third accused in the Sister Abhaya murder case. The bench headed by Justice Sunil Thomas ordered that both of the accused would have to undergo trial. The accused in the case were arrested in 2008 and released on bail by the Kerala High Court a year later.
A case that dates back to March 27, 1992, the body of Sister Abhaya an inmate of the convent was found dead in the well of the St Pius Convent in Kottayam. Though the case was investigated by the local police and state crime branch that concluded t that Abhaya had committed suicide, the case was handed over to CBI later.
According to the CBI, Father Thomas Kottor and Father Jose Poothrikkayil were allegedly having a relationship with Sister Sephy which Sister Abhaya was aware of. The charge sheet says that on the night of March 27, 1992, Abhaya allegedly saw Kottoor and Sephy in a suspicious position, following which the three accused hacked her with an axe and threw her into the well.
