Islamic radicalization is spreading very fast in India’s neighbourhood of Sri Lanka. Mushrooming foreign-funded mosques and madrasas have been churning out radicals who vitiate the peaceful communal situation in the island country.
Recently Hindus erupted in protest in the town of Chavakachcheri near Jaffna against cow-slaughter. Hindus and Buddhists revere cows. The anti-beef campaign by Hindu organisations got a fillip when Buddhist monks also supported the ban on sale of beef and cow-slaughter in many areas.
In Muslim-majority areas, Buddhists and Hindus are being attacked by Muslim radicals. Muslim women are increasingly adopting burka under pressure from the patriarchy.
In March this year, Muslims brutally killed a 41-year-old Sinhalese Buddhist lorry driver in Digana, a town near Kandy. This triggered huge outrage, which resulted in riots. The army had to be called in to bring the situation under control.
