Indian-American Neomi Rao who was under scrutiny for her controversial views on sexual assault and LGBT community, will be a judge on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, one of the most powerful benches of the US, media reports said.
The Democrats had opposed her appointment citing her controversial views on sexuality and minorities. “A vote for Neomi Rao is a vote for it judge who blamed survivors of sexual assaults for being attacked. It is a vote for a judge who claimed a sexual orientation as a behaviour,“ said Democratic National committee women’s media director Elizabeth Renda.
Rao’s confirmation came amidst opposition from rights groups for her position on sexual assaults and minorities. Rao was confirmed by 53–46 votes in the US Senate, which is basically on party lines. The Republicans enjoy majority in the 106-member US Senate.
According to India Broad, President Donald Trump has interviewed Rao, administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, as a potential candidate to replace Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the federal appeals court bench in Washington, D.C.
