Braving the tigers, leopards and wild elephants and evading the prying eyes of the hostile police who had been deployed in large numbers to stop the Sangh Parivar leaders and activists from reaching out to Sabarimala, a nine-member team led by BJP Kerala General Secretary K Surendran managed to reach Sabarimala through the dense forest in a 15-hour long adventurous night trekking on November 4.
Strong contingents of Police force including commandos in riot gear had been posted at Pamba and Nilakkal the base camps of Sabarimala to stop the BJP, Sangh Parivar leaders ahead of the one-day Pooja on November 5 as part of Chithira Aaatta thirunal Festival, party sources said.
But, Surendran and his team evaded the police dragnet and took a deviation from the Pathanamthitta- Pamba State Highway and entered the forest. Police, acting on the orders of the higher police officers stopped even the media persons at Nilakkal and Ilavunkal as part of the efforts to prevent the Sangh Parivar leaders from reaching out to the devotees at Pamba and Sannidhanam. But the team led by Surendran decided to proceed to Sabarimala through the dense forest by 2300 hrs on November 4. But nothing could have stopped them as they were prepared to face any eventuality.
There was all chances for them to be encountered with wild elephants, tigers , leopards or deadly poisonous snakes. The rough terrain with full of sharp stones and thorns bruised their body leaving them with blood seeping from the whole body. Leeches made it nearly impossible for them to move ahead. But their determination was so strong enough to cross over any uphill tasks.
Some of the youths accompanying them had a thorough knowledge of the terrain.
Police had issued ban orders at Nilakkal , Pamba and Sabarimala to check devotees and activists thronging at Pamba and Sannidhanam and avoid any untoward incident in view of the agitation against the entry of women of all ages to Sabarimala, the hill shrine of lord Ayyappa.
Even the tribal residents going to Attatthode tribal hamlet from Nilakkal had to produce Identity Cards to let them proceed. But Surendran and team took a deviation even ahead of Ilavunkal to reach the forest.
Placing a search light on their head they proceeded to Sannidhanam without giving any clue to the police.
By the time Police received the message about their trekking, they had reached Sannidhanam by noon on November 5.
BJP former State Secretary VV Rajesh, SC-ST Morcha State President P Sudheer, Yuva Morcha State Vice President RS Rajiv, Sabarimala Achara Sabha Samithi Chairman PV Anojkumar were part of the team.
