CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said on Thursday that epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata prove that “even Hindus can be violent”. He was speaking at an event in Bhopal.
“Ramayana and Mahabharata are also filled with instances of violence and battles. Being a pracharak (RSS functionaries), you narrate the epics but still claim Hindus can’t be violent? What is the logic behind saying that there’s a religion which engages in violence and we Hindus don’t,” said Yechury.
Yechury expressed the hope that PM Narendra Modi will not be prime minister after this election.
Criticising Yechury’s statement, a senior RSS leader said the CPI(M) leader was putting forward twisted logic to malign Hinduism. “Hindus have never killed a person on the basis of one’s faith or religion. India gave shelter to all communities who sought refuge in India. Left Historians and intellectuals have been trying to project Hindus as aggressors and Mughals as benevolent rulers. India has rejected the lopsided views of the Communists,” said the RSS leader who doesn’t want to be quoted.
