Denmark and other European countries have banned garments that cover the face, including Islamic veils such as niqab or burka. Denmark’s new burka law will come into effect from August 1. A few months ago, Austria had enacted such a law. France and Belgium have similar laws.
After August 1, the police can take action against any woman who wears Islamic veils. First-time offenders risk a fine of $200. Repeat offences could trigger fines of up to $2060 or a jail sentence of up to six months.
Anyone forcing a person to wear garments covering the face by using force or threats can be fined or face up to two years in prison.
