The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday requested Congress president Rahul Gandhi to contest from Wayanad seat in Kerala. The Congress candidate T Siddique expressed his desire to leave the seat for the Gandhi scion.
Although the Congress is claiming that his candidature would have cascading impact on the party’s prospects in Karnataka, the real issue is his fear of losing election from the family bastion of Amethi where Union Minister Smriti Irani is putting up a valiant fight. In the last five years, she had undertaken several development work in this backward constituency where there is not even a good motorable road till recently.
Rahul Gandhi had held discussions with CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on March 6 on this issue, according to a senior Congress leader. The Congress candidate Siddique has requested the Left Front to withdraw its candidate in favour of Rahul Gandhi.
The BJP has been alleging that there is a ‘Congress-Marxist’ (CoMa) combine in Kerala which is trying to defeat BJP wherever it has a chance of victory by indulging in cross-voting.
