The Khasi community of Meghalaya has a wealth of traditional oral literature and its music is superb.
Khasis have developed their own indigenous poetic creations called the Phawar or couplets. The salient feature of the Phawar music is that it starts and ends with hoi kiw. Songs, set in simple music, deal with various subjects and are sung in various occasions like rituals, festivals and celebrations and lamentations for the dead.
The students of Ramakrishna Mission School in Cherrapunji created a Phawar song praising Lord Shiva.
